Deactivate website

It often happens that websites that were created in FirstSpirit and published online are no longer needed. To save resources and also comply with legal requirements (e.g. publication of personal photos), these websites should be deactivated and deleted.

Examples of this are completed projects, the dissolution of department sections, research groups or similar cases.

Please use the topic ‘Delete website’ in our contact form to request deletion.

Please never delete root folders from your website without authorisation! This makes it more difficult for us to clean up afterwards. Please leave this step to us. Thank you very much!

Delete Website

The Webteam will delete your website for you if it is no longer needed. We only need a contact person for any queries during the deletion process.

Deletion procedure
For the deletion, we take the website offline and then delete all data linked to the website in FirstSpirit. This includes the following areas (including sub-elements):

  • Site structure: Main directory of the website (www directory)
  • Page content: Main directory of the website
  • Media: Main directory of the website
  • Data sources:
    • All contacts that are only assigned to the institution of the website and the institution itself
    • All news that are only assigned to the category of the website and the category itself
    • If necessary, further data sources such as theses etc.

As soon as the data has been removed from FirstSpirit, the authorisation group(s) for the website will also be deleted.

Finally, the DNS entry is also deleted if it was a subdomain.

Forwarding possible

If you have migrated the content of the website to another website in the meantime, it is possible to forward the original address to the new one. Please let us know immediately before deletion so that, for example, a DNS entry is not deleted but converted accordingly.
